Papua New Guinea struggles to contain berry borer outbreak

Coffee farmers in PNGCoffee farmers in Papua New Guinea (PNG) are pleading for help from their government to help contain an outbreak of coffee berry borer beetle that is affecting some of the nation’s key growing regions.

The Pacific island nation’s Agriculture Minister has written to the Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer, Charles Abel, asking that he release US$6.2 million of funding that has been earmarked to fight the outbreak.

The coffee industry in PNG has been fighting to address the outbreak since March, but has been frustrated by government inaction.

PNG’s Coffee Industry Corporation has been leading the response to the outbreak, including putting roadblocks in place to stop berries from being taken out of infected areas.
