Roasting Plant brings Wonka-esque Javabot to United Kingdom

United States-based roaster Roasting Plant will open its first location in the United Kingdom on 16 January.

“Roasting Plant talks to the Willy Wonka in all of us. But not only that, it gives a proper choice in just-roasted coffee that is unlikely to be found in any of the chains - and served with a smile and an interest from people who are genuinely happy to see you,” Roasting Plant UK CEO Jamie Robertson says.

The immersive roastery will include the company’s Javabot system, the brainchild of Mike Caswell, formerly of Starbucks the Founder Roasting Plant.

Javabot first holds green beans in a series of clear storage columns. When it’s time for roasting, the beans are automatically measured out by weight and then deposited into the roaster via bursts of air through clear pneumatic tubes. Roasting Plant says the curved tubes are specifically designed to keep the freshly roasted beans from breaking in transit.

The Javabot roasts in micro batches according to Roasting Plant's Coffee Masters bean profiles, taking into account changing ambient environmental conditions including temperature and humidity.

Once roasted, the beans are blown back into the columns where they rest for no longer than 48 hours, allowing their flavours to mature without decaying. Then they’re dispensed in first-in-first-out order into our brewer or retail bags at the peak of their freshness.

Roasting Plant roasts all of its coffee in each café onsite, assuring that all coffee is utilised at peak flavour and aroma.

Roasting Plant will open daily from 6am to 7pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 5pm on Saturdays. The café will serve a simple menu of sourdough and bagel favourites.
