Starbucks begins in-store testing of NextGen sustainable cup

Starbucks launched pilot testing for its new eco-friendly takeaway cups in five major markets in North America and England on 10 March 2020.

The cups are made with biodegradable polybutylene succinate, known as BioPBS-lining, on the interior rather than polyethylene, making them recyclable and compostable.

The trials are taking place in New York, San Francisco, Seattle, London, and Vancouver.

Starbucks will seek feedback from baristas and customers on whether the cups prevent leak and maintain drink temperature.

The cups are a result of the NextGen Cup Challenge, which Starbucks co-founded with McDonalds and established in partnerships with Closed Loop Partners and NextGen Consortium.
